Hi, my name's Bethany. Grew up in town and didn't have anything but dogs and cats until I was in my 30s. I've had chickens for about 5 years and have barely started to have real issues I don't know how to fix. I've lost some chickens to being egg bound (no matter how hard I try to save them.) But now I have a rooster with a swollen eye that had a hard lump and puss. I have him isolated now, he's acting 100% normal but the other eye is getting watery now. Could use any advice. I don't think it's respiratory, no hens have had any issues, he's less than a year old....so absess maybe?

Hi again, Bethany,

What I'd start with is holding a warm compress on each eye, especially the worse one for a minute or two. Then rinse his eyes with saline solution and put Terramycin or triple antibiotic ointment in them.

Can you look inside his beak and see if you see any yellow patches or does it smell bad?

I'd put them all on a vitamin regiment for a couple of weeks. We'd use Poultry Cell in their water every other day when we hear sneezes or someone looks off. That will help him fight this infection too.

Let us know what you find in his beak and any other symptoms as he may need an antibiotic.
