Under Your bed
Well last night, along with many other nights lately,

my border collie was asleep in her crate as usual, it was

around 1:00 AM, and everyone in the house was dead asleep,

and I was TRYING to go to sleep. Well Bridgit wakes up and

starts growling like crazy. Like a "I'm going to bite you" growl. Nothing

was there, all the animals were asleep. It scared the crap out

of me! So my question is, what would cause this? She's never

growled like this before, I don't know why she just recently

started. Does she see shadows and think it's a person?

If somone walks inside the bathroom with the lights out,

she growls, but noone was in there. Somone mentioned

she could have bad eyesight... She'll bark at shooting targets.

You could stay awake and watch her til she growls; you'll need enough light on her face to see her eyeballs move below the eyelids. If this movement happens before the growling starts, then she is dreaming, and growling about what she is dreaming about.

What kind of medical problems could cause this?

She just seems so awake when it happens. I guess she could still
be sleeping. I'll try to get a good look at her eyes when she does it again.

is she just growling? or is she actually attacking stuff? the first thing that popped into my head was rage syndrome....(google it) may be a bit extreme, but you never know!

You may also check for mice in your walls. When my BC started growling at the walls, I was fully convinced that she was finally officially insane. Untill she actually dug a hole through the wall and caught a mouse. Poor dog, I wanted to kill her for that, but she thought she was doing her job, I guess.
I would rule out medical issues if you don't find a physical cause for the growling. I do have a BC/Kelpie that growls (rather threateningly) in his sleep - no, he does not sleep in bed with me any more! lol

Border collies are great watchdogs and very protective of their charges. Your dog just may be warning you of a trespassor predatory animal ( bear, cougar, coyote, racoon, possum) , dog or cat or owl or bat ( hears echolocating sound) outside of your house.
