Above
is a list of sunflower varieties that produce black oil seeds. Gives description of each flower, hieght and size of head.

Personally I'm taking my chances and sprouting stright from my feed bag;) Have 4 feet from garden to fence that is a pain to mow so filling it in with cheap seed that hopefully wont look too bad and reap some winter fat for the girls.

I may pick up a short variety package for front of house.

Thanks for the link. I'm trying a variety of options for sunflower seeds now. I bought two packages of seeds. The 1st one is listed on the link you recommended. Mammoth (I got lucky cuz I bought them before I saw your post). The 2nd package I really got to give the patch some color. It's a variety pack of sizes and colors but it doesn't tell me what varietys are in the package. I'm also sprouting some BOSS seeds out of my feed bag. The main reason I wanted to sprout these on a tray first was to make sure there had not been any process done to the seeds that would make them sterile. Its been a couple of days and they are starting to sprout. I have the packaged seeds starting to come up in the starter trays that I have in the house. Someone posted that they don't transfer well but I already had these started so I'm going to give them a shot and if they fail I still have seed I can put straight in the ground. If anyone has any tips on having success with sunflowers I'd love your input. May all your days be terrific!
