Hi,

I am a NEWBIE! I have 5 two week old chicks. 1 RIR, 1 Black Sex link, 2 Barred Rocks, 1 Amaracuana. And 1 one week old Slikie. They are all great. However. Lately I noticed the Black sex link being real bossy. She sparred one of the barred rocks twice. And just now sat on someone else. She is the biggest... Is this ok? Are they just figuring out the pecking order? Or do I have a rooster?

.Give me some picures it mite just be the pecking order.but like i said picures. That wayI can knowif male or female.

Ok. I hope its not male. But I also hope she is not a naughty bossy girl either... These photo are from when she was a week old. That was a week ago.

Some chicks are just bossy. It's not anything to worry about unless she draws blood or causes so much stress that the other chicks huddle in a corner all the time.

As far as sexing, with sex links, it's usually easy to tell. Black sex link males have a white spot on their foreheads, while females are all black. I couldn't tell from your photo if this chick has the spot on its head or not. And if you can't tell now, watch for (bad) black and white barring with lots of white around the neck. That is a rooster, while a hen will be all black with some red neck feathers (and maybe some other red feathers here and there).

There is no white on her forehead. White neck that travels down to her but on her underside. But solid black all the way through the top. Here is a clip that I caught by chance the first time I saw it.

Oh ok Good! Thanks. I thought it may be a mix of play and "ouch! that's too rough!" going on. Thought I was gonna have to rename Sue to Trouble!
