Boston? or around there?

I am about an hour south of Boston. annbal I can not believe you are still chickenless! I met you at a poultry show in Middleboro a while back and hubby ( you have to get that man moving) was with you. I think you left with a headache because it was so loud in there! Remember we all had matching feathers? I might have had another screen name because it was when it was the other board and well I am not to computer literate so I had to change it. Can't even remember what is was now.
This is the only chicken board that I visit, I don't know of any others and love this one.

We got bees, and we have been busy with that, plus I changed careers (my mid-life crisis career change) by becoming a Pilates instructor. So, now that I'm settling into that job, I find I have more time - I will have chickens this spring! He got a bunch of plywood together, so he's thinking about it, but we need lumber, beams and such, and the footings - I think I will just go to Home Desperate and buy the footings and start.

I love this one, too, I've gone back to the other one a couple of times, but the software is just soooo slooooow I can't stand waiting. Whatever, it's nice here, and I enjoy all of the people who are so helpful. There is hope for me!

Hi! We're from Newfane, VT...15 miles north of Brattleboro...45 minutes from Keene, NH, 20 minutes from Hinsdale, NH, 35 minutes from Greenfield, MA.

We just our FIRST batch of cuties this week, yes I'm a proud chickie mom, so in love!!! There are two New Hampsire Reds, Two White Rocks, Twenty two Barred rocks, and one surprise that McMurray gave us as a bonus. We got a handmade brooder box a friend gave us, and they're doing nicely in our cellar with a red heat lamp. My husband also made a screen frame with chicken fencing splined into it (our profession is mobile screening) and then he installed jiffy-clips to keep the frame intact. We have some VERY curious and excited dogs and a cat!

HI Kengia,

My parents are in Cambridgeport, VT., next to Saxtonsriver, had my oldest child in Springfield, Vt. We live just below Sturbridge, Mass. in Holland now, I'd love to live up that way again.
Good luck with your cuties, they are fun. We have some 3 week olds, I love to take them out of the box and watch them trying to fly, it is so cute! If you have a furnace in the same room in cellar and are using shavings keep an I on the dust, it can mess up the furnace. Our cats have been around the chicks and chickens since they were hatched. One male cat likes to look at the chicks and smell them, he really gently touches them when I hold them for him. He has had plenty of chances to hurt them and hasn't, the other wont come near. The older hens flap their wings and the cats run away as fast as they can, scaredy cats!

You'll have lots of fun watching them when they play keep away!

good luck!
Cindy

I'm in western MA, near Amherst. I grew up outside of Boston.

I've got 6 six-week old chickies, and I'm totally in love with them.

How did everybody fare in the storm "Noel"? We got lashed pretty bad, lots of trees down, our electricity went out for about 24 hours, and our five chickens didn't care for it at all!

They got all wet, and so did some of their pine shavings bedding before we chased them all in the coop and shut them in for the duration. They were locked in there from about 2:00 on Saturday to 7:00 on Sunday morning. Boy were they grouchy when they came out!

To add to the insult, our generator is right near their coop, and it is LOUD!!! That upset them even more. On Sunday, they ran right back in the coop and stayed there until we turned it off.

Thank goodness no trees came down on their coop or run. That would have ruined my (their) day!
