Waving from Somerville!

I don't have chickens yet, but plan to in the spring. This winter's all about research and coop construction.

Tell me all about your chickens!

Hi PM welcome to another BYC...
Glad you were able to rehome your baby, Buff.
Kay, snow's a good insulator, and we've gotten plenty this week...sounds like your babies will be comfy and cozy.

I would let mine out, if they'd go...but they won't...

I was thinking the same thing Spotted Crow until I realized that the coop I bought is designed so that in order to collect the eggs I have to lift up the roof and I can't lift up the roof unless i shovel all that snow off:rolleyes:

Oh well, at least it is warmer this week and the girls are venturing out a bit but complaining every time they see me, like it is my fault.

On the plus side, we've been out x country skiing twice and we usually never get to do that in December.

Happy holidays to all!. I bought my girls a couple of pomegranates for xmas. I can't wait to see their faces on Xmas morn!!!

Anyone doing anything special about this little blast of cold air that is suppose to hit us tomorrow?

Regarding the cold blast headed this way, I've leaned lengths of plywood around the north-facing and sides parts of the chicken run. But I noticed when the wind whips, the girls do get their bloomer feathers ruffled up just the same.

I sort of want to lock them in the coop, but it's probably not good for their curious little minds...

Nothing special here, they already have cracked corn in with their pellets and all the waterers have been plugged in for weeks. Just getting ready to lock them all in shortly as I can still see a few rebels out in the yard! I have one coop that an older group of chickens always go in early, it is the young ones that want to stay out until the last minute. They also can go in and out of their coops at will but love being outside scratching and being nosy. Tomorrow I return to work so they willbe back to being locked int heir pens all week, they will be soooooo mad at me! The party is over.

Well with all the cold weather, I think the my coop is too air tight right now, there is a bit of condensation on the window...I'm ready to hit it with my blow dryer! DH says I should drage out the propane heater!!! There is a 4" vent near the ceiling and 1/2" holes up next to the ceiling...The humidity is high, but that has got to do with all the snow? The girls even went outside today!!! But it is a chore rounding them up as there is no pen yet!!!
So on to the next question!!! I just got my McMurray catalog in the mail, and I want 2 chickens, not 25!!! Does anyone plan on putting in an order this spring...maybe we could piggy back on each other?

Hey Buff, My coop is so small, I'm not sure what they would do in there all day aside from pull each other's feathers out, but I just got another bale of straw and placed it parallel and about 3 ft away from an existing bale. Hopefully tomorrow I will cut some heavy duty plastic and put it across the top of the two bales so it will create a little sunroom (if we get any sun).

Standard hen, I too am in denial about going back to the work thing. Luckily I'm taking Fri. off to head to upstate NY for a long weekend with a good friend.

Cheryl, I was toying with the idea of a couple of EEs until I read everybody's "what not to do with your chickens next year" thread. It seems everyone is saying don't go up, only go down. So myabe I will stay for at least this year. Hope someone takes you up on your offer of splitting an order of chicks.

(We need a spellchecker on this website.)

Stay warm everyone. .

Kay
