I've only hatched (chickens) twice. No real experience here at all! I did learn that you need LOTS of patience to do it. I do not have my full allotment of patience yet!

I wish I had good news.. After Casportpony mentioned it, I realized I did have a "sticky chick" on my hands. I decided that the only chance I could give him is to get that thick liquid out. Since he hadn't internally pipped still, I figured he was still breathing fluid. I had the idea of a "water birth" like humans do. I would submerge the egg with water, loosening everything up and when I saw the veins were deoxygenated or when I saw the beak, I'd take him out. I filled a bowl with perfect 99 degree water. I stuck him in. He started moving!.. I was hopeful! Then the moving stopped... The veins disappeared instantly. I gently touched his delicate body.. No movement. I waited, just to make sure. He was gone. I gave him the only chance I thought he'd have... I guess he was probably breathing air after all, I probably just couldn't see his beak. I peeled away the shell, it seemed his bones had formed to the shape of the egg, and he was terribly malpositioned. He would have just slowly died, a prisoner of his own shell. The worst part is, there seemed to be poop in the egg as well, which I frankly don't even understand. I'd post pictures, but I'm not sure if anyone wants to see them, though it is interesting. On the bright side, I adopted a Cayuga duckling from my local Reber Ranch, and he's the sweetest, most loving animal. All he does is snuggle Thanks everyone for your help, I wish he could've made it..

Okay, I will post pictures very soon! While I'm at it, do you guys know anything about duck poop? My duckling has been having very strange poops. They're slimy, dark brown diarrhea, and it smells EXTREMELY BAD, and it only comes out at little bit at a time, and it's projectile usually. I feed him baby duck feed for the most part(Purina Flock Raiser) but I try to give him a little extra protein every day. 3 days ago, I gave him a feeder guppy, yesterday an earth worm, and today I gave him another guppy. I know the extra protein can make it smell, but this is just SICK smelling. I also know the poop can sometimes be watery if he drinks a lot/doesn't have a lot of protein, but this is almost a mucusy consistency. Could he be sick? Thanks again!

He sure could be sick... I would suspect coccidiosis or a bacterial infection.
