My husband and I recently embarked on this new adventure to raising chickens for eggs. We brought our flock of 6 home on April 30, 2022. We purchased from a big box company - Cal Ranch and are not certain exactly what breeds we have. Breeds were on the outside of the containers of the chicks, but there were at least 2 if not 3 different breeds listed and the very nice kid that assisted us was not confident either of whether or not the breeds listed were actually what was in each container. I have attached pics in hopes someone here can provide some further knowledge in that area.
We think we have 2 Sapphire Gems, 2 Rhode Island Reds, 2 Prairie Blue Bells.
We purchased chicks to add to our 1864 Farmhouse. I love gardening have we have created a nice 40' x 40' garden plot where I grow enough food to add to our food storage to help keep us supplied throughout the winter; not for everything we eat, but some. We both thought adding chicks for eggs would be a nice addition. So far, watching these little fluff balls grow has been fascinating. I love sitting by the brooder and listening to them peep and scratch. I am amazed at how quickly each ones personality comes out. I can't wait to get them outside in their coop and run and see how they thrive in a much bigger space than a brooder.
Along with gardening, I work full time for the state of Utah in the Licensing program for early childhood programs. My husband is retired and fills his days writing a book and taking motorcycle rides. We have 2 golden retrievers who have taken kindly to the chicks. They stand by the brooder looking on and watching the silly chicks. We have a small Main Coon cat who also has taken kindly to the chicks. She sits by the brooder all day sleeping and guarding.
I found out about BYC's awesome community by chance when I was Googling information about chicks. BYC seemed to provide the best advice and had a plethora of information.
