Boy or Girl? Silkies-Update on Pg 2!

It's nice to hear she's a "nice lookin" bird! Thanks for everyone who's replying... Now I'm curious, since a couple people have said the Partridge is a pullet, can people tell me why they think its a pullet and why they think it's a cockerel?

Someone mentioned Penciling, what is that? I guess I should look it up.

Thanks for everyone's opinions! Keep em coming!

I can show you some pictures of penciling

The first few pictures are of my partridge boy, Ranger. I'm pretty sure the males do not display penciling but I am still learning about the partridge variety. Males will also develop streamers from their crest which helps in identifying their gender. Streamers resemble a "swept back appearance".

Here is Rachelle when I first brought her home. She has penciling (looks similar to barring in a way, at least to me haha).

It is possible for pullets to lack penciling though. Rachelle's sisters don't show much penciling at all compared to her.

I mean no harm when I say this but those things are so ugly they are cute!! To me they look like a big colorful cotton ball. I live in east texas we don't see these kind very much most folks here just want layers, so these are the first good pics I have had to look at LOL. Pretty birds tho.

Thanks silkieluver_07, The close resemblance to "barring" is what confused me. I kept looking up penciling and thinking..ok, not seeing it. Now I get it.

I've seen Ranger on the boards before. He's one of the reasons I got a partridge bird when I got Dudley

Why I think the partridge is a boy, body stance (tail angle, back, legnth of legs) the way is stands/holds itself (look hard between the blue boy and him, compared to the splash pullet) the way the wings tye into the tail/cushion area, crest (parted, larger comb, swept back look), coloring is that of a male, The hard tail feathers are another reason. Some males can be late or very lil amount of streamers.

I have a bunch of partridge that came out of my white line, it should be great fun to see how they finish out. Have not had partridge or buff since I sold out to Chick A Dee a few years ago. Please share pics on how the three develope in the future!

Update for those of you who guessed on the chicks. Right after I posted, I confirmed that the blue was crowing.

The partridge started crowing this morning--it was pretty amusing because he has a really high pitched "voice"...we joked about his lack of male-ness..

The white one is still really small and no crowing, she's probably really a girl, which everyone thought and we have thought since the beginning.

Now we have some decisions to make. We have 2 cockerals and 1 pullet in one small coop...that can't possibly turn out ok...

Out in the big coop, I have one rooster with 4 girls..and so far they are beating him up. (These are the EEs and Orpingtons..finally merged)

Not sure what we'll do.
