i feel dumb asking but i figure if i am ever to hatch eggs i might as well hatch

No dear, its the last 3 days of incubation, where you raise humidity to 75% or so, and shut the bator down, turn off the fan, and don't open it until they hatch. If you open it, moisture leaves and they shrink wrap and die. Its pretty important.

If you humidify your room, you can peek in, but I leave mine down until most are out. Then if I feel it neccessary, I will assist any stragglers.

Leave the incubator on, just shut the lid and leave it alone.

PLUS: It may be super tempting to help a chick out of a egg, or take one out. But a chick will last about 3 days without food or water because of the nice yummy yolk in its belly.
