So I'm new to backyard chickens and I am looking to have my own organic backyard chickens.
Anyway, since plastics contain so many terrible chemicals and they are banned for use with humans (i.e. PVC pipes in houses and BPA in bottles), what should I use that isn't plastic as a waterer that doesn't freeze over in the winter? Any suggestions??

If you want to avoid plastics, your only real choices are metal, ceramic, and glass. All will freeze in winter cold, including plastics.

If my choices exclude plastic, I would choose some sort of glass our ceramic since it doesn't rust. Some sort of heater may keep it from freezing of there is electric available.

I use rubber bowls from tractor supply, they freeze but I can flip them over and break out the ice. No idea if they contain hazardous chemicals.

Chickens will happily drink from a bowl, they just make a mess. I don't recommend using them in a coop since the bedding will get wet. In the run, they work well.

I use them for feed as well. Actually my chickens prefer when I dump the water and they can drink the dirty nasty stuff off the ground.
