Brahma Eggs

I believe my beautiful Brahma laid a brown egg today. I didn’t catch her red handed but through the process of elimination she’s the only logical owner of this egg. The only other 2 options of girls coming to age, are an ayam cemani (White eggs) and a pekin duck (huge white eggs)... this is brown and I took a picture of it next to a tiny Japanese bantam egg. My Brahma is only 5.5 months old and I was told that they don’t start laying until 6-7 months. Also, I would’ve thought her eggs would be larger. It’s small-medium in size and again it’s next to a tiny Japanese bantam egg... any thoughts?

Could be hers. It is spring so a lot of autumn chicks are coming in to lay. Some quicker than others. First eggs do usually start small and get bigger over time, though I’ve never heard of Brahma eggs being that large.

Thank you. I feels pretty obvious and I feel silly now that I look it again. She’s definitely not done growing. I just assumed since brahmas get to be 2.5 feet tall that they’d have a larger egg, but she is only halfway there lol.

Males might get that big, but not the females.
My light brahmas laid light brown almost pinkish eggs.

Well I’m at work, but I can post sons recent group pictures where she’s in but not exactly the focus. Are you sure they don’t get that big? I read a few things about how it takes them 2 years but even the females reach 2-2.5 feet. But you can’t believe everything you read on the internet, right? Lol. If you have brahmas, I trust your knowledge-

A Brahma’s size depends on his/her breeding. They vary A LOT! My 3 came from the same hatchery, but 1 is considerably larger and 1 is considerably smaller. The one in the middle is about 7 pounds. Remember, Brahma was Grandma’s meat bird at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution, before the invention of the Cornish Cross nearly put them out of work. Lots and lots of variation in the breed. The very biggest are the exceptions, not the norm. Also, contrary to popular myth, bigger birds do not always lay bigger eggs. It depends on the individual. Brahma hatcheries and breeders would tell you to expect medium- to large-sized, medium brown eggs. That’s what I get from mine.

Wow, thank you. That’s a lot of cool Brahma facts! I know what you mean about their lovable qualities. I now have 3- I loved the light Brahma so much, that I got 2 more- one dark Brahma, and one buff Brahma (both 2.5 months). The one runs up to me and chirps until I pick her up and then she falls asleep in my arms. You are amazing though, thank you again!
