Brahma or Buff Orpington for kids?

Beautiful picture! We have California Whites, Buff Orpingtons and Silkies. The Silkie hens are wonderful and lay the cutest little eggs! We had them for about nine months before we got the other chickens. Since the three Silkies were pretty much grown, we introduced the Buffs and Whites to them as youngsters. They all get along great! I did get one packing peanut - a beautiful Buff Roo who is soooo gentle. I have never handled him or the others, except the Silkies when they were young. I would recommend Silkies and Buffs. They are really cute together - the big and the small! Since Silkies can't fly, their nexting box is on the ground - the Buffs lay in their box too along with the Silkies. It's fun to see the little birds sitting on a giant egg!

Thanks so much for all the complements on my little girl. We think she's pretty cute too! I think we are going to get a few of each. They sound great so why not?

my calmest and friendliest hen is by far my dekalb amberlink. she follows you everywhere and jumps in your lap when you sit down. runners up are the rhode islands and black austalorp. my buff orp is a loner along with my golden laced wyandotte

If you are open to a different breed--by far my barred rock are the tamest/gentlest---more than my BO or Wyandotte. I have had two now and they both had the same temperament, they just follow you around, sit on you, my second one coos at me and will rub her head and neck on my hand to get me to pet her, just like a dog. When I go to the run, she storms the gate to get to me, the others don't care, and when you walk up to her and put your hand out she does not try to run or dodge away from your hand like the others. My kids like her (Violet) the best by far.

Never had Brahmas but I have two BO's and they are SO sweet. Both jump up in my lap for pets and will sit there for long periods of time, making their little "tribble-like" noises.
