Brahma roo behavior

Hi everyone! There's a lovely thread about dealing with cranky roos and I have been studying up because my girls will eventually need a guy now that Crazy Leroy is gone. I have 4 Barred Rock ladies who lay their wee tails off for me and 2 teen-aged Brahma girls--1 buff, 1 light. I have gobbled up info from the interwebz from before I started and chose Brahmas because of their "gentle giant" nickname (the buff, little Deedee, has proved to be a lamb; we call her our "therapy chicken" and joke about taking her around to visit the hospitals).

I am still shell-shocked over Leroy. I now have full access to the coop and my beloved hens but I often jump when one brushes past me. The Rocks are sweethearts, though...it's just nerves and I know I'll get over it. My question is specifically about the Brahma roos. How accurate are the reports? Is there a chance I'll get one that thinks he's Jackie Chan? Good grief, I'd hate another Leroy. I was thinking of hatching several eggs, keeping the friendliest (and hopefully hugest, bwaahaahaa) and re-homing or freezering the 2 or 3 others. Looking forward to your expert info! I don't have Brahma's, but my aunt has a breeding flock of them. Her roo, Bam Bam, is very gentle to the hens and is even good around my toddler. And he's huge! She had Bam Bam in with smaller roo (his son Jr) until she decided to to start breeding again. They rarely had any dust ups, and they still get along well even though Jr doesn't have any of his own hens yet. From what I've seen, Brahma's are very good roos!

I have a dark Brahma rooster. He was supposed to be an Ethel, and ended up being an Elmer! Actually I haven't had a moments trouble with Elmer or the other two roosters I ended up with! Brahma roos take almost a year to mature so it can be some time before you know his temperament. I have Black Bart, (black giant) he is crowing, mating and acting like a rooster but he is not mean to the other roosters. I have Harvey (white giant) (name from the movie Harvey, the white rabbit!) and he is crowing as well and starting the dance as too . They all get along well, stand together, etc. If I had to choose one to be rid of it would be Bart. Elmer and Harvey will eat out of my hand. Elmer will follow me around too. Bart will not. All this to say that I think each rooster no matter the breed is an individual. So far, so good with the three. I'll post a photo of Elmer standing beside Bart! That is the first photo.


Harvey is so big when he clucks it sounds more like a duck! Elmer doesn't crow yet, but it' just a matter of time I think. They are all 17 weeks old yesterday.

I have a Buff Brahma roo and he is very good with his ladies but I keep them in a separate pen from my New Hampshire roo and his ladies. I was free roaming the New Hampshire pen and my Buff Bramha got out! It was a war between the two. I think it depends on whether they are raised together or just their disposition. My roos are great with me and the rest of the family but not together.

I’ve had excellent success with the Buff Orpington also if you like that breed. But there’s always a jerk in every crowd. Good luck to you.

Well that just makes good sense, they are in competition for the girls!
