Brahma Temperament Bantam vs Standard? aggression problems!?

Well, I met my first chickens two days ago so I really have no idea. I really ment that more as a general rule with every species. I'm lucky, I have had my chicks two days and they already seem to be getting attached to me and they seem like they are going to be very gentle. They eat allll the time though, I can't pick one up for 2 seconds without it pooping on me LOL.

Temperament varies greatly by strain and by individual, but overall, Brahma Bantams as a breed are gentle and make good pets (and yes, you can generalize somewhat about the temper of a breed--like Silkies are good broodies and Orpingtons are generally nice tempered--there are exceptions, of course, but these observations generally hold true). That being said, the little bantam roos can be quite feisty. I've had several that would fly at and attack feet--not viciously, just posturing. But the females are usually very nice. I do think breeding matters, and exhibition birds are probably truer to temperament just as they are truer to type. I've never had a hatchery Brahma Bantam, but hatchery birds in general are more unpredictable, IMO.

Sorry about your experience. I hope you don't give up on the breed, because they really can be a joy to own.

yeah. and i just felt like posting. by my Posts i hope i didn't Discourage anyone away from chickens or... The um. Meanness of them to turn you away from certain breeds. I was just telling my experiences truthfully. and trying to get the point across that Its just certain Chickens that are mean. some aren't

. Their alot like people really. If you observe them closely you can tell. Sort of. lol

I hear what you guys are saying about the roosters being mean and all, but it's their job to be mean and attack anyone that come's near to their hens they pick(even other chickens) unless diligently trained otherwise. My rooster is the meanest thing you've ever seen, he'll attack you in a heartbeat but if you pick him up and "tenderize" him(rubbing the sking under their feathers) he'll fall asleep and sit right in your lap. Once he attacked my and ruppied up my shin all because I dared to touch him. His dad was a big, mean, and grumpy rhode island red and he killed at least three of our other roosters including one of his own cockerals

A couple years ago I had a rooster who was mean to all the other members of my family but me because I raised him, so I taught him to stay and come. It was pretty awesome. But my Brahma bantam is the sweetest thing ever! all you have to do is pick her up and she'll settle down in my arms and let me pet her. I think it's all a matter of the right combination of breed and attention/training.

My personal belief, is that a lot has to do with environmental. Dogs, chickens, cats, etc. I breed Basenji's. A lot of them used to be quite nasty and a lot of them still are. However, I believe, that because I socialize the heck out of them, and I am on top of them, and I watch the genetics, I have great puppies. All of my puppies I have placed are good dogs. I have more than one that went to a home with kids and I say the same to each potential owner-socialize, socialize, socialize. BUT, it also helps to have good breeding practices also. I also agree with whomever said the from the discount breeder you basically cannot predict the temperment of the chicks. I would keep trying with them and if they don't improve, I would put them in the freezer.

I am also getting some Standard Brahmas tomorrow. I have been told they are not aggressive, but not friendly either, they seem to accept you are there and that's about it. I am hoping to breed the trio and get better temperment with lots of socialization. However, the gentleman did say that all the hens and Roo they came from are friendly. I really hope second gen is much better.

Haha, yeah. I thought it was kind of funny though to look back at my old posts and realize how horrible my grammar was back then. I still agree with many of my points, though perhaps they could have been explained better.

I found an add where they were giving away a Brahma rooster. I got 6 red star sex link young hens. He was a little aggressive at first and seemed to calm down a bit. Some thing got in and over two nights killed 4 of the six hens. The 2 hens have started laying , and he has decided I am his arch enemy! He will run across the yard charging at me. And when ever I come outside he starts crowing, constantly. I had an empty propane tank in my hand when he came at me last time, he saw I was serious and turned tail back to his pen. Next day, same thing. The hens will run toward me for food,, but he is nothing but aggressive. He is beautiful, but he has got to go.
