My Barnvelders are almost 4 wks being hatched on May 7th and it is now May 30. I was told they were purchased from a game supplier who said they were hatchery stock but wouldn't said which hatchery. They look very similar. They are feathering rapidly, have tails and shoulder feathers. One is darker (Chocolate) and the other is a tan (Muffin)

What do you think?

I had three chicks but when one died I thought the barvelders needed buddies. The only thing I found that looked about the same age were these brahma chicks. The small dark brahma makes me wonder if I have a cockeral. It has no or not much of a tail, its wings have small feathers while my other brahmas have long wing feathers and are getting quite cute tails. I believe they are shy of three weeks but I do not know for sure. They are from IFA. What do you think?

These two light brahma chicks look so similar we can't tell them apart.

Both have tails and long wings and are getting shoulder feathers.

Quite the pair- very cute.

Is this one in the corner my Roo? These are my dark Brahma.

See how short its wings are and no tail.

Is it just a later hatch date? Compare the feathers on the other dark Brahma Chick who has a tail, shoulder feathers and long wings.

nice long wings, and is getting shoulder feathers.

See no tail compared to the other chick who does have a tail.

My barnevelders the girls will have dark chests and feather faster than the males will. The boys have a cream chest. Light brahma again feathered faster but also the boys will have bald or sparse back feathering while the pullets will feather on the shoulders and back quickly. Hope this helps

. In this one you can see two light brahmas they are the two directly in front of my knee. You can see how they are twice the size of any of the other chicks. They are generally about a pound by this age. There is one of the barnevelder chicks to the right side with he black and brown barring. I will get a couple close ups of them for you this evening of what a pullet looks like of each breed. The barnevelders generally show their sex fairly early.

Thank you for the wonderful pictures of your chicks! I am starting to wonder more and more if my two barnvelder chicks are boys. I believe I read not all lines of barnes have tummies that are white or cream for males but mine are making me wonder if the white tummy being a male holds true for mine.

FWIW I now have a 16 week old Barney pullet called Neil Patrick Harris... I was convinced she was a he, as we're most people on here, but nope definitely a girlie. She was similar in colour to your Muffin and it seems that the light chicks tend to feather in quite dark from everything I've read. Good luck!

Here they are about a week later on June 8th.

They are outside in the tractor in the day now as there is just no room in this small box anymore.
