I've always wanted to raise my own chickens for the eggs. I'm gonna go ahead and jump in and do it. I'm doing this in a tight budget but if i wait until i have the money I'll never get to do it. So can i get some advice on the best way to build a coop etc? It would be greatly appreciated. I'm so excited!!!!

Please make yourself at home and we are here to help!

If you are anything like me, you may have bits of wood/coop materials laying around. My dad and I built my coop from the things we had laying around. (We only had to buy supplies for the run.) It only cost us like 100-200 bucks to build it. We also get shavings for free because we are friends with people who own a saw mill. You may be able to do something simalar. You can easily build nests out if old boxes, baskets or even storage crates to reduce costs. I've attached a link to help also.

Again, welcome to the community!

building a coop is alot of fun. just remember to use your imagination if you want to keep within a budget. i tore down a farrowing house when i got out of the hog business and had tons of good lumber and metal, and windows. if you know of anyone wanting to tear down a garage or barn start there for supplies by just offering your help.

Check craig's list for people giving away chickens - sometimes coop included, also scan your neighborhood on garbage pick up days for things people throw out that can be useful. If there is a rehab store in your area head for it. Some times commercial establishments throw out wooden pallets - take apart you can get enough wood to save you $$$. Many people do use them to make the entire coop.
