I am new to this backyard chicken thing, we have cared for inlaws chickens here and there when they are out of town but for having long term responsibility this is new and we are going big in terms of coop because of "chicken math". The plan is 6 chicks to start. We are converting our second detached garage into a coop + indoor run for negative winter temps + outdoor run and eventually 1 acre of free range. I'm kind of at a loss in terms of coop design, we are shooting for approximately 100 sq ft of garage conversion. My goal is to have only about half of that open to the chickens when the weather is sufficient for outdoor roaming but the possibility for indoor roaming without them feeling "too cooped up". The space is fully insulated, concrete floors that have removable garage floor liner for deep cleanings. The windows are HUGE though, those are my biggest concern and will be used for ventilation. They are 38×57 double hung double pane. Is this going to be too much? Too much light, too much everything? I dont know if I'm suppose to build a tiny coop like the store bought ones to place inside this area or if giving the chickens lots of space will make them happier? Pretty much a blank canvas at this point and looking for input from the experts.
