Hi Everyone

I live in NSW, Australia, my husband and I are preparing our area in the backyard for our new venture, hopefully up and running by October. I am very excited about having chicken and lovely fresh eggs.

Any recommendations on which breeds would be very helpful, we are looking at getting 4 chickens.

Cheers

Anne

Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Best of luck to you, your husband and your future flock.

Some great breeds to look into include, buff orpingtons, australorps, EEs, andalusians, RIRs, and sex links. Below is a link on different breeds too. (Also, there are a few other links on helping you get started.)

Again, welcome and feel free to ask any other questions.

Welcome to BYC! What better breed for someone from Australia (or anywhere for that matter) than Black Australorps. I have had many of them and they are very hardy (both in heat and cold), friendly, and docile birds that are great layers of large brown eggs. I had them when I lived in the northern Sacramento Valley where summer temperatures frequently reached 117-118 F (123 F once) and they did just fine. I just made sure they had some shade and plenty of fresh water. Whatever breeds you choose, good luck with your flock.

So you are planning to have only 4? Good luck with that!! Have you ever heard of chicken math? It sounds like you will be keeping chickens for eggs. What color eggs do you want? Check out the breeds section of this site. You are going to be surprised how hard it is to choose a breed with so many beautiful and productive breeds to choose from. Good luck with your new venture!!!!

Hi, yes we are only keeping chickens for eggs, we live in a residential area with a small section in our backyard which is not used, we were getting fresh eggs from a local egg farm but it closed down. We really miss our fresh eggs so we decided to start looking at keeping chicken in a coup with a small run.

I really appreciate your feedback
