Our brand new shed with roll up door has all of a sudden taken on the new name of chicken coop.(don't ask) :).... The picture is similar to our building, except we have 2 windows on either side. 10 x 16 with wooden floor and pre wired. No other doors except for the roll up. We have heat index at times of 103* Shade netting will be used in the chicken run. What else can I do to make the coop itself cooler? Shade trees are still growing so they're not an option right now.

My chickens do not stay in the coop in the day time, nesting boxes are on the outside so is food and water. Insulate the ceiling area if you want to try and lower the inside temp---have the area above the insulation well vented with power ventilator fans if possible OR just put a sprinkler hose on the top---on a timer---on and off every little while to mist the top to keep it cool during this heat/hottest part of the day and year.

You're going to need more ventilation. Maybe put a sheet of plastic over the floor to protect it in case you want to use it for a tool shed someday ;). I'd put in a small door and ramp for them. You can't leave that garage door open all of the time due to wind, cold and rain.

An option for putting in a small door for them is to put it in the floor instead of having to cut and finish that nice siding. You'd have to jack the building up a bit, but it will give you a tremendous shady spot for the chickens to hang out and dust bath in during hot weather.

If you allow them under it----you have to think, how do I get those eggs way under there. how do I get to that broody, how do I get that dead chicken, sick chicken, etc, etc, etc. Mine are not allowed any where I can not get to!!

Excellent point. If I did that I'd consider raising the building 3 cinder blocks high (22.5"). That's plenty of room for me to get under.

my first thought was the water on the roof.
IDK where you are, but it sounds like somewhere hot and dry and possible water is not a surplus.

hang the siding, I would put in a chicken pop door..
and I would build a wire wall with a walk in door behind the overhead opening.
you are going to get sick of opening that overhead door all the time..

funny thing, this morning I just finished tearing the last of my lean to coop down. It had a dirt floor and the roof slpeped the wrong way. I am going to rebuild it .

I ordered 50 bags of concrete mix that will be delivered next Thursday. I have a lot of cleaning up to do before then..

I won't be using it for a coop anymore.
it is going to be a place to park my lawn mower and tiller and all the hand tools.

I guess that's relative. I have a shed like his and I really like being able to open the whole end with one motion. Those doors are light as a feather so it's no effort. And it's wonderful having the whole end open like that.

Her shed... lol.... The roll up door is feather weight ( pun intended) and my 81 yr old MIL can open it which is a plus plus! The building itself is guaranteed up to 130 mile winds. We're in NC so we get plenty of rain plus tons of humidity. We're at 91* now with 63% humidity, heat index is 103.
