My silkie just hatched 2 australorps and 6 call ducks. I am in Australia so try not to judge my calls to harshly good stock is impossible to find here. We have lost the 2 australorp chicks and 1 of the calls in the first two days despite the brood area being fully enclosed and wrapped in bird net. Usually I'd think rat or feral cat but I can't figure out how they are getting in. If anyone else has an idea let me know.

Oh that is just the sweetest little duck. Do you think a snake could have taken them? Is there a more secure area you could put them in? Something with sturdy wire mesh instead of netting.

While we have had snakes in the garden before they tend to get harried by the magpies at this time of year as they have their young on the ground. We have yet to have one make it into the chicken pen let alone into the brood area. there is wire after we lost the two australorps I wrapped the brood area in netting in an effort to either prevent whatever was getting them or at least spot where they might be getting through. Nothing, no holes, no nibbles, no corpses.

I'll probably move her to the indoor brood box with the remaining babies if we loose another. The only reason I haven't done it already is I've got four ducks sitting at the moment, there is not enough room indoors for all of them. We only have one brood box inside.

Cute babies! Sorry for your losses. Maybe you could move them somewhere else to brood them to keep them safe?

Good luck and I hope you can figure out what is getting in. Welcome to our flock!
