In the Brooder
Hey everyone, I’m not really sure what to say here so I’ll just start.
I had chickens for a small portion of my childhood. I used to love going and gathering eggs, watching eggs in the incubator and playing with the baby chicks. But we had a mean fella (rooster) that would try to get me every time I would go to the hen house, he was just nasty. And I never liked when they were butchered especially when I saw one literally running around without a head. Yikes! As an adult I’ve always wanted to have chickens but between renting home and having small yards I never thought it was possible. We were rent a home on a half acre and on s whim asked if we could have chickens and were granted permission yay! So we purchased 12 leghorn chicks. We loved them and had a ton of fun with them while enjoying fresh eggs from all but one who turned out to be a rooster .
One winter morning, after a graveyard shift my husband come home to snow painted red and the neighbors’s dog devouring the last live chicken. We were both angry and heartbroken and decided not to get anymore chickens. Five years later we are happy with our mixed flock of 12 and finally a home we own! We have actually found our dream property/home and are trying to purchase it now, if we get it, we will grow our flock, start raising meat rabbits and hopefully a few cows too. There is a trout pond on the property that I’m super excited about.
Our gals keep us in eggs mostly year round. egg production, of course, slows in the winter to one or two a day instead of 12 (we are actually increasing again and getting 5-7 a day). I recently learned of an egg preservation method that I’m pretty excited to try so we have enough eggs next winter. There is nothing worse than buying eggs from the store. Anyway I can’t wait to learn and teach more. Thanks for allowing me to be apart of this community!
