I will be starting a flock for the first time in Pacific Beach, WA. Its on the WA coast about 15 miles of Ocean Shores, WA. I want a mixed flock for color and some eggs but this is strictly a backyard hobby. I also want some broody hens to raise chicks and want a beautiful colorful rooster. I wonder if a Brown leghorn rooster would be good to have or should I choose another type rooster. He doesn't have to be of a certain breed but want some color and of proper size in relation to the hens. I don't prefer chickens that have the feathers on the legs and/or feet. By the way, the WA coast gets lots of rain and wind 9 months of the year so I need to work with chickens that can tolerate this kind of climate. Its great to meet everyone and I'm excited. Shopping for coops and enclosures first before getting my chickens,, Pacific Beach Ed

Welcome to BYC! I only have one breed so can't offer advice there, but regarding coops I can recommend building your own vs buying a flimsy store bought one it will last longer and be built to your specific needs. Good news too under the articles section there are quite a lot of them to consider. Once again, welcome to our flock!

Edit==Adding following text: Also those store bought coops that say they hold 12 or a specific number of chicken aren't realistic. My 20 quart cooler holds 2 chicken, but realistically they won't be able to live in it.

Hi Ed! We used to live in Seattle and vacationed in Moclips many summers! You will need a roof over your run to keep them from floating away, and a nice dry house above the water line! Ever considered ducks?
Seriously, I have kept brown leghorns, they are great layers. They can handle the Temps on the WA coast, but they do not want to be wet. Dry bedding, dry house -- even if you have to run a fan!
Best of luck, and there are other WA folks here, look for the local thread.

To Backyard Chickens!

Broodiness has been bred out of most breeds. Silikes are know to be broody and some heritage breeds. It might help to find a local breeder
