Got my first chicks in Feb 2018 through mail order (30 total). All but 6 died (most in transit)! Bought more through the local feed store in April to replace the ones that died. Lost 6 more (3 to our 5 month old Blue Healer puppy who just wanted to play), then bought a rooster from a local breeder (I named him Roger). Haven’t lost any since then. Total flock= 25. Puppy, who is older, now leaves them all alone. My original 5 started laying in June. My rancher husband, remodeled his rundown coop for me (see pic). A racing pigeon joined our flock in July. We call her Pidge. Now, I am a crazy chicken lady, and loving it. I free range them, which poses both rewards and challenges. They are hilarious to watch, but make messes everywhere. As of July 2018, I am getting 5-6 eggs a day. I found this site after pinning a picture of fun chicken leg bands I could order on Pinterest.
Best Purchase: Automatic Chicken Door that opens and closes at preset times.

I read that about Heelers. She is eager to please but messes up once in awhile. When I chase the chickens off my patio and deck, she gets into it and has a tough time disengaging once they are cleared. Other than that, I haven’t had any problems with her. She is scheduled to go away to “doggy college” for a month to learn to help us herd our cattle at the end of July. Hopefully she will be more inclined to cattle and less to the horses and chickens!
