Currently I'm building a chicken coop using salvaged wood. Hope to be complete before Thanksgiving. Aiming to start with 6 hens. I have much to learn and hope to gain from this community.
Wishing you all the best with your new coop build and flock!
Keep us updated and be sure to check out the coop pages for ideas on how to build the best coop for your climate/situation (LOTS of ventilation up high is key)!
Glad to meet you. Best wishes with that coop build.
Here is a short article from BYC on coop ventilation. It's fun to read, has excellent illustrations, and wonderful links to plans for coops for different climates. It points out how a coop that is perfect for New England, where I am, would be not good at all in Texas or Arizona.
If you have not already sited your coop, you might want to think about the prevailing winds where you are, and set it so the main breezes (not storm winds) blow through the coop, but the winter storms are blocked. If you are not sure of wind directions in your area, you can use the National Weather Service for your area (use google).
You should also think about drainage and put it on high, well draining ground, if you can! Here is a great article about dealing with a muddy run, with hints about what to do if you have no choice about using low ground or clay soil.
You can use the Articles button from the menu to browse articles, and also see the huge collection of coop designs. But you can do a more focused job with the SEARCH button and some key words.
All the Articles here are written by members. You can see they also have ratings, also by members. I like the ratings because they help me sift out the best articles, and also sometimes the ratings include comments that are helpful.
