Hello All!

I have been surfing this site for about a year wishing and dreaming about having my very own chicks. Now it looks like my partner and I are going to make it a reality this coming Spring. After reading a bunch of threads, I haven't been able to decide between buying day olds or hatching, so I think we are going to get some standard chicks and try our luck at hatching silkies.

Thank you in advance for any tips or words of wisdom.

Hello :frow Welcome to BYC and Happy Holidays! Good luck with your chicks this spring. Getting day olds is nice for instant chicks, especially if you can buy sexed pullets if you are looking for layers and don't want to deal with a lot of roosters. Hatching your own chicks in an incubator is a lot of fun of course, and very addicting, a good way to get odd breeds, and of course once you have silkies you will have plenty of broodys to hatch eggs for you.

Welcome to BYC!

Hatching eggs sounds more fun than just buying some days old.

But since you are just starting out, it's probably better to buy days old first.

Welcome to BYC, and good luck with establishing your flock. Buying sexed chicks you have a better chance of getting mostly pullets. When incubating (which is great fun) have plans for the excess roosters.
