Glad I found this site for one. I'm new at keeping backyard chickens and I know I will need help along the way. I'm from South Mississippi and I built my coop over two weekends. What I thought would be to small for 4 Barred Rock hens looks like a Chicken Condo now. Never knew they slept so close together on the roost. Heck I could squeeze about 8 more on that roost. I'm excited about this and being here.

Welcome to BYC! You will find lots of useful information on this site. Glad you are excited about your Barred Rocks. Just be careful you don't overcrowd them. You need at least a minimum of 4 sq. feet per bird in your coop (more is better) and at least 10 sq. feet per bird in your runs (again more is better) if you keep them in runs and don't free range them. Overcrowding can quickly lead to feather picking and even cannibalism. Good luck with your flock.

Welcome to BYC. Check out the "Learning Center" and "Forum " then drop down to "Raising Backyard Chickens" to find a lot of great threads with information. The emergency thread has a lot of info about diseases and worming. Have fun with your chickens--they are very entertaining.

Welcome to BYC!

Love your avatar of the Barred Rock! Yes, they do sleep in tight formation at night! But you will need at least 4 or 5 square feet of space per bird in the coop for good mental and physical health. Chickens go off on each other very easily when cramped in and if they are stuck inside the coop for long periods of time, as during those long winter months, or a long rainy season, they can do a lot of damage to each other. So watch your spaces. :)

Enjoy this new journey you are on and welcome to our flock!

When they roost they are close together for warm, or security. When they are active they need room to move around without bumping into each other and starting squabbles.
