Hi everyone,

Our family just bought a farm and we are excited to start a new way of life. We have decided that chickens are what we plan to do first. That's how we found BYC.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

We are brand new to just about everything, not just chickens. It's scary and exciting all at the same time.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

We plan to add maybe a dozen chickens to our farm in the Spring.

(3) What breeds do you have?

We've been looking at many breeds but haven't decided what to add yet.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

Hours of searching on Google.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I love to read and learn new things. I also like to reinvent the wheel a lot.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

We have a great, supportive family. In time, the kids and grandkids will move to the farm property as well.

I hope to learn a lot here. Thanks for being here.

Hello BigMikeW. Welcome to BYC! There is tons of info here and very good people to help you on your journey as a new chicken owner. :)

If you want to get the most out of BYC, I suggest you do the following:
  • For general education, spend some time browsing the Articles link above and possibly the Learning Center. You will find excellent information for both newbies and long-time chicken owners there.
  • When you have specific questions, most of the time a quick search will come up with the answers.
  • If you don't find anything useful that way, post your question in an appropriate sub-forum. People here are very helpful and will answer your question even it has been asked 100 times before.
Good luck with your new farm and enjoy your time here.

:welcome

It's great to have you here! Your state thread will be a great place to chat with others that share your locality and climate, they can help you figure out what breeds will work in your area. If you still need some help deciding, check out this article from the Learning Center:Pickin' the Right Frickin' Chicken: Guide to Picking Backyard Chicken Breeds

Best of luck to you, have fun!
