Vesta couldn't suppress an eye roll, "No, Lark. People who have guns legally are likely to be trustworthy. And people with guns and dogs? I trust them."
"What, do you see a license for gun ownership anywhere?! I certainly don't!"

Lark obviously didn't realize that the guy, guns, bloodhound and all, could be simply a hunter.

Huddling into her leather jacket, Lark stuck up her thumb; a signal for the truck to stop. As her hand went up, her brand glowed shades of red, and a silver streak of lightning made the ground tremble.

"Gah!" Lark exclaimed, arms dropping to her sides. "I HATE THAT!"

Clearly, lightning didn't strike only when Lark held her hand up.

"Joshua Thompson."

"Jinx Sapphire." muttered Jinx.
Reba smiled at them, then turned to open the next door, so far she had only seen bedrooms, but she was hopeful. This door opened to reveal the broom closet

"No Lark. I'm sorry. Usually they have giant orange signs that say, "I am licensed, come hitch a ride." Why would he keep it in someplace like his wallet, right?" Vesta said smoothly.

The driver pulled over. He was a large man with a silver beard and bushy eyebrows, one of which was raised questioningly. "You kids need a lift?"

Lark rolled her eyes at the comment, but couldn't think of a good enough retort.

"Yeah, yeah, we do," Lark replied, sounding utterly bored.

Vesta shot Lark a look, "Yes, that would be great, thank you."

The driver nodded and jerked his thumb back, "Hop on in with Angus, if you like. He's friendly, but he tends to drool."

"Good with me." said Vesta, she hopped into the back, "Hi handsome! Are you a good boy? Yes. Yes you are. Ew." She rubbed the old dog down.

"How about this one?" said Joshua. He opened a door that led to a flight of stairs going down.
