I have had Jersey Giants for 4years and have recently hatched 19 Icelandic chicks. Am trying to specialize in climate appropriate chickens for the great white north. Look forward to chatting chickens with people.

Some Icelandics have difficulty in the winter because of their large single combs, but some have different comb types less susceptible to frost bite.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Congratulations on your successful hatch. You've made me envious; I would love to have some Icelandics. Based on what I've read about them, they must be the hardiest chickens on earth. Unfortunately they are rare and expensive, and no one ships the birds or eggs to where I live. However, we are planning to move soon. Perhaps I can get some Icelandics in the future. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.
Congrats on your hatch!

How egg-citing to hatch your own birds. Good luck with them along with your Jersey Giants. I love that breed! We are so glad you joined us! Feel free to ask any questions.
See you around BYC

Welcome to Backyard chickens. I think you will really enjoy the "ICELANDICS,' thread- put that in the search box and it should pop up.

It seems they tend to hatch a little earlier than expected. And are also great escape artists. You can find out about that and much more on that thread.

Who did you get your eggs from?

Thanks for your welcome. They hatched mostly one day early. I got the eggs from Viking Chickens in BC.. Due to the large number of Eagles in my area I have always covered the pens with mesh and use heavy duty panels to keep out the coyotes and bears. Hopefully that will keep them in.

Be sure that the mesh is at least 1/2 inch or smaller or you could have problems with weasels or minks squeezing in through the mesh. A single weasel or mink can literally wipe out most or all of your flock in one foray.
