Bread???

If I go into the yard with bread they all go nuts!!!!

One of my runner ducks will jump up and down at my feet quacking and one of my bourbon red toms will try to maul me and steal it away. He can get pretty aggressive if bread is involved.

Out of all the treats I pass out to the flock, white bread is their favorite. I don't understand why. They don't get as excited over the whole grain breads.

Cantaloupe wins hands down at our coop. They do love bread and tortillas, and biscuits, but show up with a bowl of cantaloupe, and you better watch out! LOL

That's funny because my chickens love cantoloupe too. I walk out there with some cantoloupe and my best girl, Cinnamon, comes up to me and gives me a begging look.

Bread is ok as an occasional treat, but is completely lacking in nutrients that a bird needs. I think I have given mine bread maybe 2 or 3 times in the last 3 years.

I never give bread to my ducks or geese. I have seen too many cases of bone disease and malformation in rescued park ducks. I always take chicken feed to the park to feed the ducks nearby. That way I know they are getting at least two good meals a week. More if I can get over there.

Whole grain wheat is probally fine, just with all treats, don't over do it. Bread is usually not as good because it is refined and contains lots of "extras" the birds don't need like salt, butter, bleached flour, sugar, etc.

All I have to do is open the patio screen with a couple loaves in my hand and they all go crazy-I don't even have to call them. I buy loaves 6-9 at a time at my local Kwik Trip-they are priced 3 for $1.49, and I freeze them for a treat later on. I have 64 chickens, all free range, and I give them about 2 loaves every three days or so. White bread is their fave, but they also like buns, toast, etc, but especiall PANCAKES! When I make a pancake breakfast, I'm slightly embarrassed to admit that I make extras for my chickens. There was even a time when I accidentally dropped a whole pancake on the ground...and one chicken grabbed it, flipped it over her beak and over her eyes, and took off running with the rest of the flock in hot pursuit! She couldn't even see where she was going, and DH and I laughed til our sides hurt. Other treats they go crazy for: watermelon, cantaloupe, corn chips, cooked rice and oatmeal (on the extra-cold winter mornings), and bananas. They are so much fun!

:confused:Well I guess I'm over doing it on treats but they just love treats. I give them a apple every day(they split it between 12 of them) and they love it. Is that o.k?
