Hi All, I’ve had a mixed chicken/duck flock for years, with some very broody chicken breeds so am used to breaking the hens. However, I just added some Metzer Farms ducks last year and have had much more duck broodiness from their Welsh Harlequin, Cayuga, and blue Swedish lines. I had never realized before that ducks can bite hard enough to draw blood! I’m going out of town in a week and want to try to break the ducks before I go as my pet sitter may quit if a duck bites him. It’s quite hot now (100 F highs) but we will have three cooler days before I go.

My setup: Ducks mostly lay and are broody in chicken metal nest boxes in the shared coop. Lots of fighting over nest boxes due to both broody hens and ducks. I’m currently working on breaking hens by placing in a shaded wire cage with a wire bottom and roost. I give them a small fan and iced water in a bottle when it’s so hot. Hens are realy hard to break in the heat. I’ve only broken my older ducks a few times, by removing their nest. But my newer gals are nesting in the chicken boxes so I can’t remove them. Some ducks are still laying eggs in nest boxes so I don’t want to block all ducks from nest boxes. Would it work to put them in the wire cages with a bowl of water and food on those predicted cool days? Thanks!

Wow, I’m surprised they draw blood, too. I’ve had a broody and other ducks bite me hard, but they only ever leave red marks. Their feet scratches, however, are nasty!!

The wire cages could work, sure. I personally just close off the coop door during the day, unless you’re unable to?

Also.. Couldn’t the sitter just wear gloves??

Yeah I didn’t know that ducks could bite so hard - I was shocked! My older ducks have never bitten me like that. I think I should buy the sitter a long pair of rose gloves. I use work gloves because my hens draw blood too, but both the hens and ducks have figured out that they can bite my wrist/arm above the gloves, so I need to get him long gauntlet style gloves. My forearms are now covered in bruises, scratches and bites. It’s not a big deal but looks awful! I’ve been preemptively explaining to my coworkers that no one is abusing me - I just have a lot of broody birds at the moment!

At any rate, I can’t lock the ducks out of the coop during the day as many of my birds lay at all times of day, including the afternoon. Even my ducks will lay in the afternoon.

I have one duck that is prone to going broody and when she does go broody, I lock her away from the flock in a large stable like shed. I ensure that she always has food and water. I try and reduce how much hay is around as to reduce the chances of her making a nest and going broody again. I keep her locked up in this stall until she lays an egg.
She has been getting broody less now that I have done this.
