The easiest way to break a mini is to find a small saddle and lunge them- let them buck, rear and all!! Then try putting 2 small tires- go cart tires or something on the horn- tie one on each side and let them wear it to get used to the flopping- make sure they are high enough so their legs wont get caught up in them if they take off running. There is nothing worse than a child climbing on and accidentally kicking a pony and it taking off. This is the reason for the tires step. After they get that spunkiness out of em- lead them aroung with a 50 pound bag of feed on their back- you may have to strap it down. then you can get behind them with long lunge lines and practice the turning, stopping and ll, Trust me this works- i have broke dozens like this- even big horses. I know it sounds bad like this, but it is safer than you getting up there and getting thrown and stepped on. The traditional way is what others are describing, but after doing it "my" way- I have put children directly on the pony's back with no problems. Its all up to you, just be safe- I have been drug across more than one field in my time....
