My quail pen is a chicken tractor type cage and i was wondering if gambels and scaled quail would fly up and break their necks on the wire roof? If they will how can i prevent it from happening?

That all depends on how high the roof is in relation to the floor. If you have enough room, you could put in some poultry netting, allowing it to hang down enough that if they fly into it, they might bounce off. Or possibly pad the ceiling. If you have 5 or more feet from the floor to the ceiling, they can usually avoid the ceiling. Try to keep the quail in an area away from things that might scare them, like dogs, cats, or humans sneaking up on them.

Well, don't believe what I just said about 5 or more feet being high enough not to have quail flying into the ceiling breaking their necks. Out of no where, I had it happen to a hen yesterday. Flew up over 6 feet during the night and broke her neck. I will be there with you doing something about my ceiling.

to avoid broken necks-- put in cages 8 or 9 inches tall.

I would definitely add poultry netting. I had some over my pen, but it got a hole ripped in it and when I put ply wood over it I immediately lost one because it hit it's head on the wood.

Another option is that you can try cutting their primary feathers if you don't have a problem with it.

alright if they keep flying I will do that. They have flown but it was more straight and they can see me coming. oh, by the way I put some netting in it seems to have worked so far
