I've raised chickens for twenty years but never had this happen. I have been missing a hen about every two weeks for the last two months. I found out yesterday what it was. The fox had killed one hen and had another in his mouth but when I came out the fox dropped her and ran. There are a few puncture holes in the breast and a tear in her skin about the size of a quarter. Doesn't look like the meat is torn, just bruised except for the three punctures . Very little blood. I have been putting peroxide and neosporin on it. This happened yesterday. Will the skin mend or is it to late. I was wondering about her being exposed to rabies. Thanking in advance. frankoo

Had a hen get her face torn up by a hawk. She was in rough shape for a few days but ended up fully recovering. I used Super H powder which is an antiseptic and it keeps the wound dry, It is a white powder, it stops the blood flow and therefore the hen is less suseptible to pecking from the other hens. You can get it at most feed and grain stores. I would recommed keeping her seperated, but not removed from, the other chickens so she can rest and you can keep an eye on her food intake/output. Chickens are hardy creatures. The powder is wonderful because it dusts on and gets in all the open areas without you having to touch the wounds. Good luck.
