Oh jeez. I just read up on canker and I think you might be right. If so shouldn't it resolve metronidazole? Also how long before I can try it again, the withdrawal period I think it's called?

Metronidazole is the usual treatment for canker, 250 mg daily given orally for 5-7 days. Have you tried that yet? Some use acidified copper sulfate 1/4 tsp per gallon of water for 5-7 days. The problem with not getting a diagnosis first is that you may be treating the wrong disease. Miconazole treats yeast (fungus, candida,) but does not treat canker which is a protozoan disease that is also called trichamoniasis. A withdrawal time is about not using eggs when treating with drugs or antibiotics, anti-protozoans. Since mist things are not approved for chickens and used off label, we can’t really tell you when eggs are safe to eat. With most I would wait at least a month but that is up to the individual.

I just want to stress that if it is canker, you want to keep him away from all your other birds, as it’s very contagious and is spread through water sources. Very sorry to hear about your guy, a couple of my girls have had canker and it’s a nasty disease. Best of luck to you in treating it

Thanks guys. Upon checking the Merk manual and the AI information they propose that trichomoniasis presents with oral lesions. Then as it progresses it coalesces into ocular discharge. He has had zero problems with his eyes. I started him on the Miconazile but again I wasn't staying consistent with his dosage and he missed too many doses for it to even have a chance. Moreover when I Google about canker they say it is a parasitic infection caused by the protozoan Trichomonas gallinae which they say is treated with an antiprotozoan medication which they then list as metronidazole and 3 others. Even so far as to say it is effective in treating it. So it sounds like my guy needs a full 7 day 2x a day course. He is still trying to eat and drinking readily. The other problem I am facing though is he has had this at least 2 weeks or more. He has been segregated since he is an elderly bird. His wattles hid most of the early swelling so their is a good chance he may have had this possibly a month. The ball built up in his throat is only responding to heat and massage. Oil did nothing. What I'm getting out are chunks of a substance like chick starter or sawdust. I think I have a game plan it's just so hard to watch a bird I have raised from an egg go through this. Thank you for your advice. I know in the past you have been so much help in other chicken problems and that your advice is well respected among all of the BYC members. I will keep you posted.

Thank you peasant. As i get older but not wiser probably I have come to realize and value the sacredness of life and how intertwined we are with one another for our existence. Now I don't want to sound like a lunatic but I consider myself an animal rescuer and where possible a rehabber. I have taken and passes Veterinary Assistance and now studying Veterinary technology.. I have rescued every fawn, bird and lizard I find that needs help. Sometimes it's just a rest and a bit of water or electrolytes to get them on their way. Kid you not I've rescued . Bumblebees and 3 snakes. Bees were stuck in a spiderweb.. I digress tho I ghosted. I love my birds very much and it pains me when I can't help them. There are no Vets locally that see exotics so the closest option for help is an hour away. And the vet fees! Crikey.. For this reason I'm studying to be able to do more for them and others. I wanted to be a vet but I'm over 45 so I'm not sure if that's realistic. Anyway, thank you for the kind words and I apologize for yapping your ear off. My coffee just kicked in. Update. Sadly Sugar Cookie passed this morning. I hate to risk sounding cold hearted but it truly was the best. I was spending most of our last hours together fighting to keep his airway open. Not the life I want for any of my babies. I intend to do a partial necropsy on his gigantic throat testicle, as we have come to call it, in the morning. My first, and I will foremost strive to be respectful of him. I hope to get answers of what exactly was blocking him up. If anyone has last minute advice on this procedure I would be happy to listen. Wish me luck, and thanks for the support through this. Chickening for 13 years now and gratefully this is the first time this happened. Good night .

I am so sorry for your loss. Sugar Cookie is no longer suffering and he absolutely knew you loved him.

There is nothing crazy about rescuing any creature. I used to look around to make sure no one was watching when I would pick up earthworms wandering on the sidewalk after a rain to put them back on soil. I just turned 50 and couldn’t care less what people think.

Your pursuit of knowledge is noble and fortunately so much easier in these modern times. I still remember card catalog days!

I know you must be physically and emotionally exhausted. Rest well…I am certain in the Lord’s eyes there could have been no better steward on earth for Sugar Cookie than you.
