I am a newbie - new enough that these new chicks spent their first night in my bedroom, in their cardboard box "coop". I didn't sleep at all due to the light of the heat lamp and the constant clacking of their feeder. Not tonight!
I have just adopted 4 chicks from a straight-run flock. I got them for free. The gal who gave them to me told me that it was a mixed batch, and all the chicks were either: White Rocks, Silver-laced Wyandottes, Dark Cornish, Buff Orpington, or Buckeyes. She could not tell me which is which, however....sigh. She said because they are straight-run, gender also cannot be determined when they are this age.
I am truly hoping for hens, because I don't want to upset the neighbors with loud crowing or upset my daughter with the sight of a stewpot. So, if anyone out there DOES know what these chicks' gender is when they're this young, I'd be eternally grateful. Thank you!
Here are some photos:
All four from the top
Chick 1 ("Pepe")
Chick 2 ("Soot")
Chick 3 ("Gorbachev")
Chick 4 ("Daffodil")
