I have a friend who raises chickens. He has a large number of birds and many kinds which he keeps in pens so they don't cross breed. I have hatched eggs for him in my classroom many times but I can never remember which breed is which. He gave me some eggs for eating a month ago when this whole Covid mess started. On a whim I put a few eggs in my incubator for an Easter hatch. Three eggs hatched. The two black chicks came out of light brown eggs. I believe I hatched some like them a month ago for him and he told me the ones with solid black on the top of their heads were hens and those with white dots on the top of their heads were cockerels. The chipmunk marked chick came out of a dark brown egg. None of the chicks seems to have hairy feet. Any guesses?

Any guesses on breed?

I texted the friend I got the eggs from and told him what I had done. He said the chipmunk one is a Welsummer and the other two are 1/2 Welsummer (Rooster) and either 1/2 Barred Rock or one of his black females. So, I am guessing the Welsummer is a hen by her dark, distinct pattern. Would the other two be hens if their mother was the Barred Rock (no white dot on head) but not necessarily if she was one of his many different black hens?
