I bought what was suppodesly a barred rock peep. she is now 11 weeks old, and still doesn't have any stripes. however, she has some small brown specks on her chest. she has a black beak and black legs. is she really a barred rock, or something else?

A picture would help, but the same thing happened to us. It sounds like your chick is like ours, which is a black sex link. They are a mix between a Barred Rock & a Rhode Island Red, so it may have been mixed in with the pure BRs by mistake. I believe that's what happened with ours. Ours is a very sweet girl, one of my favorites.

Does it look like this? She looked like our other BR chicks when we first got them, but we knew she was different when her feathers came in.

yea, she actually does look like that, only the feathers came in more so far.

Here is a picture of what ours looks like now. Maybe it's not the Barred Rock you hoped for, but I love this girl! Maybe yours will be as sweet as mine is. I actually have her in the pen with some much younger chicks because all of the ones her age got sick and died a while back. She is very sweet to the young chicks. I was told that a black sex link with this coloring is a female, so if yours looks like this, she is a female. The males have some barring on them like Barred Rocks.

Mine is bigger than yours, and almost pure black. She has some brown flecks down the front of her neck. She is really sweet, and currently a house chicken! She stays outside most of the day, and then comes in a night for a few hours. She loves to sit on my lap and watch TV. I don't really care what breed she is, it just hit me that my other chickens were full color by this size, and she's still black - I won't wait for stripes anymore! Thanks for showing me your cute pics.

I love mine, too. I have teased my husband that I am going to get diapers for her and the EE that's my avatar so I can let them sleep in the bed with me at night.

I already have a Chihuahua who sleeps glued to my legs at night, which drives my husband crazy!
