I may be getting chicks soon, but which breed?! I am a total novice, and want a friendly easy to handle bird (birds...). Egg-laying for my primary focus. Looks aren't too important, I don't need anything fancy (though... I'd be nice, if I could find some).
I don't care about lines or anything, I just want a friendly egg-layer.
Easter Egger?

I was going to suggest Easter Egger too. They seem to be a popular favorite

If you want a brown egg layer, you could try Australorp or Barred Rock. Those are some nice breeds also.

Easter eggers are nice, as are buff orpingtons! Buff orpingtons are my favorite of the egg layers I've owned so far. I'm mostly out of keeping egg layers now (I'm more of a bantam lover), but I still keep a few buff orpingtons because they're nice birds. They lay a bunch, nice big brown eggs, and they're fairly friendly/have good personalities. I think whatever you decide you won't be disappointed, though! Lots of nice birds out there that lay tons of eggs. Go with whatever you like the best!

. . . I have a feeling this will lengthen out like every other breed advice thread, and everyone will say some medium variety of breeds. Sooo before that happens I'd thumbs up the Easter Eggers. They are wonderful surprise packages of color, egg color, and in my experience very quiet and friendly (past 5 months. . . before that, mine were very shy)
