Breed/Hybrid/MUTT

Ugh, that one drives me nuts, as I've *only* seen it done in a way that is like, "be a man, buy our macho wolves". I usually see huskies and shepherds being used in some areas. A cane corso....? Ugh.

Sadly that's most of the breeders down here. There are a select few that actually care about the dogs and not the money.

I am not completely sure of his ginetics. As I said before he is my mom's and i was only there when she bought him. I could ask her if i can see her papers on him because i am pretty interested in his back ground now. I know when she asked me to go help her pick out a dog I was pretty shocked at his price tag. He was $1200 which was the same thing i paid for my PURE BREED Akita. All i asked her was why she would pay so much for a mutt? The guy at the pet store then procceded to tell me why he was so much and the background behind "designer breeds" but i didnt really pay attention. I was still amazed he was $1200. It was her choice though and not mine. I personally dont like him. He is constantly timid and acts like he is afraid of everything. Not sure if that is just his breeds or from the 2 cross breeds. He is also really think headed and doesnt listen to anyone. If you try to teach him something he acts afraid and runs and hides no matter how gental or how many treats you have. So he is not very well trained either.
I feel bad for you mother. It sounds like a typical puppy mill dog. In fact, where do most pet stores get their dogs? Puppy mills. If she wanted a good dog, she should have found a breeder. I think her dog was probably overprice by about $1180. It is sad for the dogs too because they then end up with personality disorders from improper care in breeding. Just sad.

But you have an AKITA???? I LOVE AKITAS!!!!! I would have some, and yes, I said SOME, if they didn't shed. That was the selling point in getting our Standards. It is so nice to not have to clean up hair around the house.

Japanese Akita. She is my girl and so well trained. Beautiful to! She sheds so much though!!! I vaccum everyday when she sheds.

Ok so This is for everyone!

I asked to see my moms papers on her dog tonight. He is AKC registered but where is says breed it says Pekingese. On all the papers everywhere it asks for the breed they but pekingese instead of Peagle so that is how he got registered. She has all the proper paper work on him and everything else. That really confuses me but explains his price. How can he be registered threw the AKC when he is a mix breed? Someone explain this please.

He can be registered as a Pekingese because unless there is a DNA profile it can be faked. As long as the litter registration is signed by the owner of the dam and sire, the AKC will give out the papers, the owner can do whatever they want with them. Depressing but it is true.

ETA: When I say "faked", I do not mean a fake AKC papers, I mean issuing the papers to puppies that are not indeed the progeny of said dogs.

Because papers are only as good as the person signing them. The AKC is not a "doggie police" or even a "purebred dog police" in any way. They do have the authority to refuse to register dogs from a breeder that has been found to misrepresent their animals when they register them. But beyond that, they really have absolutely no authority and no way to actually stop dishonest breeders from flat out lying about which dogs sired which litters. It is not that uncommon for BYB and puppy mills who are out to make a quick buck off of uneducated buyers to claim that a dog sired a litter when he actually never even saw the dam. If/when the AKC finds out that this has happened, they then suspend that so-called breeder's right to register any dogs with AKC. But they can't unregister dogs that have already been registered. And it doesn't stop that same breeder from continuing their dishonest practices...they just switch to registering their dogs with the ConKC, APR, or any number of other "pet" registries that would literally register a hamster as a doberman so long as you send them the paper work and the check.

AKC registration does not tell you a thing about the quality of a dog's breeding (after all, at least half of all puppy mill dogs, if not more, are AKC registered). As you can plainly see, it doesn't even guarantee that the dog is purebred and not a mixed breed. Papers are only as accurate as the person filling them out makes them to be. The only thing that AKC registration tells you is that (supposedly, assuming the person filling out the registration form is honest and accurately records the dog's parents) the dog's parents were both registered with the AKC or an equivalent breed registry in another country.

I am sorry to hear about your mom's experience. Poor puppy probably came from a mill and likely missed so much important socialization. I am sure he will appreciate having a loving home with your family after his rough start.
LOL at the "new breeds"...I would like to introduce my DD's beauty...Bella the "Dalmador"...or is that "Labmation"? Twenty bucks from a farm in Quebec...no papers except the ones she learned to pee on.

Ok well thank you for explaining all that to me. I think he was 10 weeks when she bought him. So he didnt have that long to live in the puppy mill setting. I always thought the AKC watched breeders a bit more when it came to registration. Learn something new everyday though. He does have some screws missing in his head. Probably the reason I do not like him. But i know its not his fault after finding out all this. He is impossible to train and doesnt listen to anyone. He always acts afraid even when you give him praise. Other than that he is perfectly happy and spoiled with my mom. She doesnt care that she paid so much for him just that she loves him and thats all that matters. Wish i could find a way to train him though.

yeah... you mom got ripped off for sure. The miller that bred her dog should be reported to the AKC for fraud... plain and simple.

I'd also like to know what person owns the CC that is being bred with wolves...I'll share that with the rest of the CC community as we frown heavily upon this kind of crap.

x2, I was just about to post that when I read yours. Please, take those papers, call the 1800 number on them and report the name of the breeder to them. Let them know they're selling crossbred puppies with purebred papers, tell them everything you can about the situation.

These days folks cross a Maltese with a poodle and make a Malt-a-poo and charge $500 for it. I laugh. A mutt is a mutt is a mutt. I have several polish/silkie mutts. I shall call them POLKIES, and they are now $25/each! :weee
:gig If people are willing to pay it, why not? Pet stores charge even more than that for a designer dog  I call my mutt dog a corgi mix. Not sure what's in him, but he has a lot of corgi features. Best dog ever!
