Breed Question

when researching this breed, I came across to much information and feel like a fool asking but.... what is this breeds hardiness, weather wise? And temperament?

while broody I understand that temperaments change however, I’d like to understand her better to help her become more comfortable with me, my kids, hubby, and the rest of the flock... I was very surprised that she held her own against my rather large roosters (who are not accessible so I did not just throw her in with my males) in comparison. She did a really cute, what I call, ‘turkey dance’ my hubby explained as the ‘broody dance’. At her size and being the first time here I expected a way different reaction. She made herself so pretty, the silvery feathers really got a showing when she did that.

Well I live in Florida and it’s super hot here, they do great here. I have heard that they do well in the cold too. I’ve noticed they are more flighty compared to others, but they are SUPER smart. Or at least the ones I know are really smart. Chickens can go broody at that age but it’s usually when they are 1 year or more. RIRs almost never go broody.

Also she’s considered an Easter egger since she doesn’t lay olive eggs.

Ya I’ve been reading more and more that my RIRs won’t be moms which kinda sucks because when I did my research on breeds before getting my flock, it said they were great moms . Between that and their hardiness and temperament I was like “PERFECT!”.... funny how that works huh lol

Oh okay, well it’s cool you have a broody hen! I’ve always wanted one of mine to go broody, but I guess. I will just have to wait and see.

Well I have a bunch of different breeds. I have SLW and GLW, pure ameraucanas, olive egger, sapphire gem, maran, welsummer, Deleware, lavender Orpingtons, buff orp, barred rock, Cornish X, Ancona, brown leghorn, black jersey giant, and I am about to hatch some of my maran eggs. They are all 7 months old, but a lot are not laying yet.

The ones I have had in the past (I completely got rid of my flock and got new ones twice in the past because of too many Roos or just bad personalities) had never went broody.

I don’t know what SLW or GLWs are but I am surprised you never had you Ophingtons go broody. And I wanted, and still do, a Welsummer but they aren’t available in my area and I haven’t found anyone shipping them.

I have three Roos and two might not last this winter lmao. One is an Alpha on drugs, one is as scared as a rabbit, and the other has a great temperament but not exactly the plumage looking for, but he is still beautiful.
