Thank you for the additional info, there are so many choices, I'm a bit overwhelmed, so far I love all of the suggestions. The hard part is picking one. i'm limited to how many I can have in the city limits or I would try them all![]()
We have barred Plymouth rocks, Rhode Island reds, and an Australorp. The Australorp is by far and away the quietest, and sweetest of the bunch. Her demure nature has placed her at the bottom of the pecking order, though. We have horrible weather at times here and the coop is intentionally unheated. -18 F is the coldest we've had so far, but it can push well below -20 F each winter. Some places are much colder, but we have brutal winds, too. They are all handling it as well as can be! Australorps are often recommended by Mainers, too, for their cold hardiness and disposition.
