Hey folks-
I'm a chick-raisin' first timer. It's been a lotta fun so far. Our oldest chicks are almost 5 weeks. We were lucky enough to have a local farmer that had a lot of different breeds in stock. We have room for about 7 - 9 adult standard size hens. The coop is 6' x 12' and that includes a 6' x 12' x 6' high covered run and then a 6' x 5' x 3' high henhouse inside the coop. There are a couple acres for them to get out and stretch every couple days. Anyways...here are the breeds we currently have:

Rhode Island Reds 2
Buff Orpington 2
Golden Laced Wyandotte 2
Silver Laced Wyandotte 1
Buff Wyandotte 1
Ameraucana 3
Barred Plymouth Rock 1
Black Australorp 2
Welsummer 1

We got a few extra (15 total) because we thought for sure we'd have a couple die. They all have done just fine. Sorry for all the extra babble but my point of posting is to ask which ones I should get rid of to get the total down to less than ten.

I'm attaching a pic or two of the coop just for fun. It's almost finished!

Well I don't think I'm going to be very helpful in helping you choose which chickens to give up. But I did want to say your coop looks terrific and I think it's really nice of you to include a cell phone in there in case your girls need to call for help or order pizza in the middle of the night. Not many of us would be willing to do that!

that's funny you noticed the cell phone sadie sue!

I'm just not sure which breeds I have will be the most compatible and have the best personalities. We have 3 Ameraucanas because we thought the blue or green eggs would be neat but is it really worth keeping three of them and only one buff orpington or 1 GL wyandotte? These are the kinds of questions I can't answer for my lack of experience with them.

Keep one of each and one more just for the fun of it. The wyndotte are large hens. Also watch for friendlyiness. Are they all pullets? if not wait until you know for sure what you have. Your coop is neat. Gloria Jean
