She was supposed to be a Mystic Marans (correction, Midnight Majesty Marans) from Hoovers Hatchery. I have 5 16 week old pullets in this coop and at least 1 is laying.

The colors and shapes of the eggs are distinct enough that I suspect 2. However, none of the girls look old enough. The two Speckled Sussex are just starting to pink up. The Marans are darker, but these eggs are much too light, not even a 1 on the Marans egg scale.

The girl pictured above has black eyes, no feathered feet, a black beak, black comb, and her wattles have just a hint of pink.

Could she be something other than Marans? Could she be my layer?

Mystics Marans are not true Marans, but rather a hybrid created from a black copper Maran rooster and barred rock hen. They do not always lay as dark of an egg as your standard or French Marans because inherited genetics in hybrids are not always predictable. However, every place that sells them always has the dark Maran eggs pictured because that is a possibility of what you can get and that’s what catches everyone’s eye.

I thought they were a hybrid of BCM and Cuckoo Marans? Midnight Majesty rather than Mystic Marans, I mixed it up.

I also have a mystic maran from hoovers and she looks very very similar. Clean legged, very dark almost black comb/wattle, mine has brown on her chest/neck. She also lays a light brown egg like you have pictured. So my opinion would be she is a hoover's mystic maran.

Did she start laying young? Could this be my layer?
