I am trying to move from one big flock of mixed chickens to seperate pens with specific breeds. I would appreciate some help determining 1) what breed is this guy for sure? (He is at least several years old but proven fertile recently) 2) Is he good enough to breed to sell chicks ? (not necessarily for show) and what do you look for to decide which cockerals are kept to breed?

Your pictures aren't coming through
I go by the breed description in the Standard of Perfection when choosing cockerels to keep for breeding

There is really no way to know for sure if he is an Orpington. But his overall shape, leg color, number of toes, comb type, and ear lobes color are consistent with an Orpington. But these traits fit some other breeds as well. Also crossbreeding could produce a bird like this as well.

Do you have any background information on him? As in where he came from? I doubt he was a hatchery bird. Did the breeder you got him from raise Orpingtons? Were they working on project colors?

He really is a beautiful bird and has a great temperament as well. I hate to cull him out. Would he mix well with hens that are accepted as a cross already? Maybe Easter Eggers? But would that mess up there egg colors? Is there any way to know other than just waiting to see what color the offspring lay?
