here's the thing, when those people decide to breed (like most do because they want to see their hens hatch their own eggs, etc, etc, you know how it goes..), most of them (your backyarders..) will not be able to cull their extra roos.... the next thing they're going to do is try to find them a home... when this fail, then naming an established breeder as the source of their chickens will come up as a very good selling point... and when the chicks sold doesn't grow up as expected, guess who's name the buyers will remember...

I am not responsible for any chicks/birds that come from my line, that are not directly purchased from me.

When undertaking a project like my Brahma projects, obviously you increase your chances of getting the hoped for combination of genes by hatching large numbers of chicks. Over the years resulting in many nice healthy birds that were slightly, or sometimes not so slightly, off color or lacking in type. Fortunately I am working with a large, good looking, brown egg layer, so selling my cull females for back yard layers was always easy. The males if let to grow out made good meat birds, which I did to be sure which few warrented to be kept as breeders. This worked pretty well for me. Now that I have started offering hatching eggs, at good demand, some of my former culls have resurfaced. My main cocern with that is folks selling lesser quality stock, using my name. So now I may have to rethink my game plan.

I list mine in the local trade paper. The roos are free and hens are 3-5$.
If after 2 weeks in the trade paper, the roos arent gone then DH culls humanely.
Hens get to stick around a bit longer because its free to advertise in our trade paper.

We often take the culls of other local breeders to do our part in the excess chicken world. lol
DD adores Silkies and she doesnt care what their 'qualities' are as long as they are cute.

So, we have a couple 'culls' coming this weekend and another BYcer is coming to take a couple of my culls for her kids who just want some cute silkies.

It all works out....most of the time.

I know i can't speak from experience because I haven't received my chicks yet, but I don't think I could have them killed...I'm too much of a softie...I think my chickens are going to see right through me.....boy, am I in trouble...
