I'm new here and am busy gaining information on starting a flock. I have decided that it would suit me better to purchase pullets (egg layers) from a local breeder as opposed to a hatchery, mainly, because I want as humane conditions as possible and I really want to pick up in person. As I have read through the threads, I see how compassionate so many of you are to all animals and I hope I can do business with someone here.

I live in southern Nevada and would be willing to drive 4 hours or so to make a purchase. I'm still learning, so I am not ready to acquire chickens quite yet.

Some conditions I have to work within:

  • Absolutely only pullets. I am not allowed to have roosters where I live and I would get too attached to give one away.
  • I won't be ready until fall-ish. I don't want to take a chance with chicks in the heat on my first go. I am also going on vacation in August.
  • Heat tolerant breeds. I am thinking of hooking up a swamp cooler to the coop in the summer regardless. It was over 110 degrees here the other day and that is hot, hot for any being.

I don't want to say money is no object, because it is, but I would be willing to pay a bit more for a great situation.
