I'm interested in starting Basque Hen bantams this spring. I'm not very sharp about genetics and need guidance the best possible way to do it. I have one Basque Hen I intend to use in the project, and hope to purchase a couple more. But I need to know which color and breed of bantam(s) that should be use. My thoughts are to either use New Hampshires or make Rockshires (barred Rock x New Hampshires for F1). Would the reverse of Rockshires also work (NH x BR).

Breeders, I need your help. Thank you.

Can you specify which breed is male and which is female?
You'd have better luck crossing a NH x Columbian rock for F1, then breeding resulting cockerels to RIR bantams.

Well, actually let me sit on this.

You want barring in both genders, right?
With a reddish-silver base color?

Not exactly, Cyprus. Are you familiar with the Basque Hens? The hens do have some barring but it's buffish to reddish colored. The breed is not autosexed, but my thinking was perhaps I would do better in the long run going with the NH male over the barred female.

To answer your question, the male is first and female second, unless otherwised stataed.

I am not familiar with Basque Hens, but I am pretty good with feather color genetics.

Okay, so here's what I've got for you:
F0 BR x Nh
F1 F0Br x F1 Gold Barred
F2 F2GB x F2 GB

Then you'll get 100% Columbian patterned gold barred offspring.
