The previous thread re: an OP wanting to know about breeding together her sibling pitbulls sparked an interest in me re: chickens--(didnt want to hijack that thread)...

Query all, doesnt this happen alot with chicks?-- For ex I have a set of 3 chicks and 1 is a Roo-- I obtained another 14 chicks (pullets) and they all flock together at this point-- I hope to have chicks next year out of this Flock-- so the Roo will most probably mate with his 2 sisters (the first 3 are closet to each other and do everything together) as well as the other 14 girls...
I could just try to pull out all the eggs from his 2 sisters as the lay (not sure how I would do that) but thought actually I would let nature take its course...
(The Roo and his sisters are 2nd generation breeders birds, the set of 14 are hatchery chicks and much smaller-- I was thinking the progeny of the 1st three would have the gene for size- they are Jersey Giants-- concentrated in them and they would be even bigger...)

I am just thinking this happens all the time when people get an order of chicks and keep the Roo....Would love to hear other peoples' experiences/feedback...

It seems to me that, if you are not raising show chickens, interbreeding would not matter. Any fatal genetic anomalies would work themselves out.

I have no knowledge of chicken flocks in the wild, but nature tends to take care of these things on its own.

It's fine for several generations. If/when you run into problems, bring in new blood. The average backyard breeder hatching out a dozen or two chicks each year really isn't going to have many issues.

I'm so relieved to read this thread, I've just acquired a lovely light Sussex roo that is 1/2 brother to 2x of my hens. But I figure I'm not wanting any of them to be Rocket Scientists
